Collecting Shaker Style Furnishing

Shakers are known for their clean, simple, and utilitarian designs.  The Shakers introduced the pure-practicality style in America in the late 18^th and early 19^th centuries.  The Shakers created a place for everything in built-in as opposed to freestanding furniture. 

Peg rails attached to the walls provided a convenient place to hang chairs when sweeping the floor, and built-in cupboards made rooms easier to clean as well as leaving the space uncluttered for prayer meetings. 

The Shaker style’s attention to details is evident in even their humblest creations such as the wall peg and oval box.  Shaker designs are pure beauty and can be mixed with any number of styles.  Shaker antiques can command astronomical prices.  Look for finely crafted stacking boxes, portable steps (which gave access to high drawers and cabinets), ladder-back chairs, wall-mounted cabinets or cupboards, baskets from original Shaker molds, doors and hard wares.
