Handicrafts items to look for are the hill tribe embroidery, lacquer ware, painted umbrellas, wood carvings, and basketworks.
Celadon is porcelain ware that was originally made in Thailand during Sukhothai period between the year 1282 and 1323, and was revived again in 1960s. Vases, lamp bases, and a variety of souvenir pieces are good buys. Complete dinner sets are also available.
Bronze ware comes in plain, modern designs as well as traditional Thai ones. Look for bronze temple bells that have been applied with silicone so that they will not tarnish.
Spirit Houses in the shape of little Thai-style houses are also charming and are popular buys; they are not too bulky to send or carry.
Dolls are available in a wide selection in a classical dance costumes or depicting various hill tribes of the Northern Thailand. |
